The main activities of CED are research and specialised training and teaching. The main research objective of CED is the production of knowledge on the population dynamics of Catalonia, Spain and Europe, paying special attention to demographic projections, spatial analysis and studies on family and household formation. CED has also beenactive in building research infrastructures, such as the data base on Historical Population of Catalonia, and is now starting a project under the 6th Framework Programme of the EU (Infrastructures) aiming to integrate and harmonize European Census Microdata andto makethem available to researchers through the net. Regarding teaching and training activities, CED has offered a post-graduate training programme in demography, Methods and Techniques for Population Studies, since 1988. Since 1994, CED has also run, together with UAB's Department of Geography, a Doctoral Program in Demography. This Programm has been awarded twoStatements of Quality, by the Department of Universities of the Catalan government (2003) and by the Spanish Ministry of Education (2004). CED hasalso beenacting as co-ordinator of the ALFAPOP network, part of the ALFA programme of the European Union. This network of 10 European and Latin American Universities allows the exchange of doctoral students in demography. SANHISOC: Sanidad, Historia y Sanidad
"SANHISOC is an inter-university research group focused on public health in contemporary Europe. "International Health and the Transfer of Scientific Knowledge, Europe 1900-1975" follows the research project "Spanish Health Care in International Context: Sanitary Conferences, League of Nations and International Organizations (1851-1975)". This was a Consolider project qualified with honours for a five year period (2006 - 2011) by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. "International Health and the Transfer of Scientific Knowledge, Europe 1900-1975" follows a historiographical orientation in the frame of research on circulation of knowledge. It adopts the perspective of centre-periphery, as well as the analysis of transfer of knowledge, artefacts and practices from the places of production until their social and political use. The project deals with experimental knowledge on health considering the interaction, on the one hand, between the European international sphere and the Spanish society, and, on the other hand, the transfer from the places of production (laboratories, research institutes, local and national institutions, experts' commissions, hospitals, dispensaries), until the social and political use."

Agriculture in Portugal: Food, Development and Sustainability (1870-2010)

(Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) and hosted by the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (PTDC/HIS/122589/2010))

"In the last few years, agriculture has regained centrality in national and global contemporary debates, thus giving History a renovated importance. On one hand, the deeper understanding of environmental, social, economic and political impacts of the activities related to agriculture requires that current matters (such as scarcity of water resources, biodiversity loss, food prices, production and distribution systems) are examined in an historical perspective. On the other hand, the tendency of different sciences (Sociology,Anthropology, Geography)to emphasize historicity of the subjects means that the past has become an explanatory resource increasingly used by researchers from different scientific backgrounds. The analysis begins in 1870, and extends to the present (2010), so that it is possible to integrate the Portuguese pathway in a wide time frame and in the European and worldwide context. It is considered that the evaluation of the transformations that, in these decades, left a mark in the primary sector is essential to understand the current Portuguese society and economy, and also that this knowledge is important to guide policies which aim at agriculture and rural development."

Prices, Wages and Rents in Portugal (1300-1910)

(Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the designations of program PTDC/HAH/70938/2006 and program PTDC/HIS-HIS/123046/2010)

"One of its three aims was to construct a data base of wages, prices and rents in Portugal between 1300 and 1910 covering the entire country. The focus should be on major and lesser cities, both inland and on the coast, and located in six different regions. The various time series should be homogeneous, consistent and comparable with similar work in other countries. They would draw on earlier results by historians, whenever possible and appropriate. Mostly, however and given the enormity of the gaps in this evidence, they would have to be filled from archival research around the country. The project's second aim was to create, out of this mass of information, a new set of indicators in order to provide a revision of Portugal’s economic past before industrialization. This agenda would involve constructing indices of GDP, per capita GDP, gross agricultural output and productivity, real prices, CPIs and the like. Particular stress was to be placed on regional asymmetries and the integration of markets over these four centuries. The third objective made possible by this data collection effort was to study long run changes in the inequality of income distribution, both locally and at the national level, from the 15th to the 18th centuries."
